It was a very close series of heats, but Jaeger Stone took home the trophy for the 2015 Windsurfing Wave Sailing competition, across the line ahead of runners up Dieter Van Der Eyken from Belgium and local Ben Severne. Having spent a great deal of time enjoying the famous winds in Geraldton while growing up, Stone has travelled the world to compete in surfing and windsurfing events and is a member of the Serverne and Starboard Team, like the other two of the top three.
1: Jaeger Stone (Western Australia)
2: Dieter Van Der Eyken (Belgium)
3: Ben Severne (Western Australia)
The windy conditions this corner of the world is famous for delivering epic seabreezes and today did not disappoint with a strong consistent breeze between 20 and 30 knots. A 1-2m swell kept the waves at a perfect size for the pros to show off practiced skills. During this event, the riders are judged by their manoeuvres both wave riding and quality of jumps.
Windsurfers were in great spirits before the heats began. One surfer racing for the 8thtime this year told us, “This is the highlight of the year for us.” Around 50 windsurfers took place in the wave riding competition, including a number of women.
After the competition closed, windsurfers and new arrivals preparing for the big weekend have gathered in the Grace Darling Pack Event Village to catch the Copy Kats live by the water’s edge.
Tomorrow, the kitesurfing wave riders will head out into the surf to take on the waves off Edward Island in stunning Lancelin before the blue ribbon event, the 25km marathon Windsurfing race on Saturday.
