MIKEY CLANCY THE POZO KID

Mikey Clancy’s father, Michael Clancy, remembers his fine son’s time at Pozo –

The Gran Canarian kids from Pozo gathered around as the Head Judge Duncan Coombes announce that the PWA would be starting the junior event in half an hour “Get ready boys, enjoy yourselves and have a good one” They all smiled back as if God had spoken those words. Among the names on the heat draw were Alessio Stillrich ,Maurice Mauch ,Phillip Koster and a 16 year old Mikey Clancy from Ireland.

The wind and the rain poured down all day and Mikey’s training in Belmullet for his trip to Pozo. His 5 ml wetsuit keeps him warm as he attempts another back loop. May in Ireland is a good month to be out preparing and honing your windsurfing skills. Mikey Is only windsurfing for a couple of years and he determined to head to Gran Canaria after hearing from the Kelly brothers in Donegal that they windsurf all summer in shorts in Pozo Gran Canaria.

The Junior World Cup goes well and Mikey had his photograph taken wearing his Canary yellow Lycra rash vest with every legendary windsurfer on the planet in a group shot on the Pozo promenade. He was hooked already on this amazing sport and here were a hundred addicts busting out moves to make your eyes water. He watched every heat and even met the PWA wave event champion Victor Fernandez. He vowed to come back the following year and unlock to code of Pozo.

Mikey next four years summers were spent in Pozo except for one year when he thought of Pozo every second recuperating from a serious ankle injury in Ireland. Mikey took Spanish studies at his college and he knew this would help his windsurfing. It did ! He could chat in Spanish with the sailors and be at home with the locals. Weeks and weeks in Pozo were paying off and double forwards were dialled in. Mikey had his own scheduled time to optimise his training in Pozo. His favoured evening sessions as it was less packed and cooler.

Pozo welcomed Mikey and Mikey really loved Pozo. Life off the water was a blast and friendships were forged. He competed strongly and met tough opponents in Robbie Swift, Boujmaa Guillol and the recently deceased Peter Volwater. The dream had come true and he loved it all. This week let us all remember the Pozo Kid Mikey Clancy as the PWA World Wave Windsurfing Championships kick off.

Michael Clancy.
