PETER VOLWATER RIP

11707565_10153720830230166_8832759739147205413_nRest in Peace Peter  Volwater – you never want to write these words about a friend but in a way maybe Peter has found peace to rest in. I, his family, friends and fans will miss his presence greatly but the gift of his friendship will last forever, as will his legacy to the windsurfing world of a sailor that could excite, compete and win at any side of our sport. Peter could do on a windsurfer what only a very select and gifted few people in the world had the ability to achieve; even less can now. When I think of Pete not only do I remember all the crazy days we had on the water around the world, I remember the equally crazy times off the water; Pete you made me laugh until I cried and still do. There was never any malice in Peter, the laughs we shared weren’t at anyone’s expense – it would be the silly stuff like driving the wrong way to a surf spot we knew nothing about, purchasing the biggest tv in the shop then returning it the next day after realising how stupid it looked or on the eve of a swell buying ridiculous gun surfboards in Hawaii to ‘have a go’..I can just see Peter’s excited smile now as he danced at the thought of the waves to come. Peter loved windsurfing; you don’t fly into Ireland in the middle of winter to chase swells with my brothers and I unless your only motivation is the love of your sport. Equally the world of windsurfing loved Peter, his passion, his talent, his huge personality. We, the windsurfing world,  will unite in that love with his fans, friends and family to remember with all our hearts a gentleman, athlete and the ultimate Flying Dutchman!

Deepest thoughts, sympathy and condolences to Peter’s family and friends who I know he loved dearly.

Rest in Peace Pete,

Finn Mullen.

From the PWA

PWA World Tour Windsurfing The windsurfing world has been shocked again this morning by the untimely death of one of the Netherlands finest windsurfers, Peter Volwater.

Pete was one of the biggest characters on the PWA Tour since his debut in 1995 and was an incredible all rou
nd talent, with regular top 5 finishes in multiple disciplines. Known for everything from massive double forwards in the 50 knot winds of Gran Canaria, to blistering speed on the slalom course, Pete was a truly spectacular in all aspects of the sport.

Off the water the story was no different and, with a massive smile and a drink in his hand, Pete led the charge in the bar just as much as on the water, always ready to have fun with the huge number of people who were lucky enough to have him as a friend.

Despite Pete’s massive energy for life, he has sadly lost his long hard battle against his disease.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Pete’s family and girlfriend who have been by his side with love and support through everything he has been through, and with the many, many friends who will miss everything that Pete brought to life and to windsurfing. He will be very sadly missed.

RIP Pete
